I'm sorry to share the news that long time Bücker owner & pilot Alan Abell of Elgin, Illinois, has passed away. Alan was a long time Bücker owner and was a good and always helpful friend to many in the community. You will find many items on this website that he contributed. Alan had stuggled with cancer for the last few years.

Rest in peace.

Spanish Fuel Selector - A work-around

Written by: Administrator
Created: 15 July 2024
A number of people kindly wrote with suggestions and advice but the consensus among the Bücker cognoscenti was that the Spanish fuel selector is almost impossible repair reliably. Ten years ago I made a modification to the  fuel system of N28Bu and it seems to have worked out well so it seemed best to do the same thing for this aircraft.

In the USA we are free to make this type of modification with only a log book entry and suitable testing. Things may be different where you live so please check before trying anything like this.

The basic premise is that the Spanish selector/gascolator is removed along with all of the levers, linkage and mounting hardware. A new, more modern gascolator is mounted low on the engine side of the firewall and a brass three-way selector valve is mounted approximately in the location where the original push-rod passed through the firewall. This avoids having to run fuel lines all the way to the rear cockpit and back. The finished installation looks something like this:

There are two important things to note here: Both the valve and the gascolator are mounted to the steel fuselage structure, not just to the firewall. This is necessary to ensure there is no relative movement and that metal fuel lines are safe. Your installation may be different depending on where you choose to route the fuel lines through the firewall.

Next, and this is the key to the whole scheme, the original push-pull fuel control rod is modified by removing the screw that prevents its rotation (hidden behind the rear cockpit throttle quadrant) and adding two 10mm universal joints  using roll-pins (or other hardware) to prevent slipping.

Now "Gravity" or "Flop tube" operation is selected not by pushing/pulling the control but by rotating it through 90 or 180 degrees.

This schematic should make it clear. Contact me if you need more details or part numbers.

--oOo--

Almost all CASA/ENMA fuel selectors seems to leak a little but this one leaks more than most and is obviously not safe to use. Does anyone have a manual, diagram or some advice on servicing these valves?

Thanks - Steve

Bücker Presentation at Airventure 2024

Written by: Administrator
Created: 09 July 2024
Long time Jungmann owner Gail Schipper will give a presentation on Bücker aircraft at AirVenture Oshkosh this year and from what Gail has shared of her research it is going to be fascinating. As well as the history of the aircraft and its flight characteristics Gail will talk about the way in which women featured in the development and operation of Bücker aircraft. Beate Köslin, later Beate Uhse shown in the picture below was certainly one of the most colorful of the women pilots working for Bücker and you may learn a lot more about her and her colleagues during the program.

Be sure to mark Tuesday July 23rd at 1 pm on your calendar. The presentation will take place in the IAC building.

Moved from it previous date later in the year in the hopes of better weather, it was not to be. The Saturday of the flyin was not bad, but the previous day and the following day were both rainy and gray, preventing many people from flying in. It has been a year of record rain in Europe. Credit must go to Horkan Wijkander who flew his magnificent Siemens Jungmeister SE-AJA all the way from Stockholm, and to Benoit Dierickx who arrived from Namur in Belgium.

Weather not withstanding, it was a good flyin. Benoit put on an aerobatic display in the LOM Jungmeister, those brave enough to fly in showed off their aircraft (the CASA Jungmeister from Stockholm was a particular favorite), friendships were renewed and the meeting finished with a wonderful dinner and video presentation in the airfield restaurant.

In the days that followed, many people visited the Bücker museum in Switzerland where Albert and Elisabeth Zeller were as always, the most gracious and patient of hosts.

Degerfeld Update

Written by: Administrator
Created: 26 June 2024
With just three days to go until the Degerfeld Bücker meeting, here is an update from Hermann Diebold.

Dear Bücker enthusiasts,

This is information for those who come with their planes. If gliders are active and the winch is out please do not cross the field from the runway to the tower because we use rubber tow cables for the winch. Alsways use the full runway 09 for taxiing or for backtrack if you land 27. Or the taxiway north of the runway and taxi all the way east before turning towards the tower. Airfield information will assist you and advise by radio on 125.835. More information on the airfield can be found here: https://lsv-degerfeld.de/der-flugplatz

That CASA Bird Symbol

Written by: Administrator
Created: 10 June 2024
From Brian Karli -

For many years, I loved seeing pictures of the “bird” symbol on the fin of CASA Jungmanns.  I thought the symbol was really beautiful, the arched eagle whose claws gripped a boxy set of wings.  You can see the symbol on the fin of this original color CASA Jungmann photo.

I never got to see a real one though. All the CASA fins I had come across were just grey colored and had an E3B number at the top.

I often wondered why some Jungmanns had the symbol and others did not.  Recently, Paul Rosendahl sent me a picture of the symbol (which was copied onto paper) that came with his Jungmann project.  He wanted to know more about it.

Having been curious for a long time, I reached out to CASA Air Force historian Paco Rivas who told me:

“The ‘Águila” mark/badge is an original design of the Spanish Air Force used in all those airplanes destined to the Academia General del Aire / General Air Academy (AGA) in San Javier-Murcia since its creation in 1943.”

So, it seems the planes assigned to the Spanish Air Force Academy had the symbol and the other training squadrons did not. Paco also mentioned that the symbol had been in use for a long time and could be seen on a more modern Spanish Air Force training airplane the T-34 Mentor.

This got me thinking some more.  Where did this symbol originate?  I found out part of this the symbol went back to 1913, when the Spanish Air Force was looking to modernize their logo.

The chosen logo was created by Princess and Infanta Beatrice of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, wife of Spanish airman Alfonso, Duke of Galliera.

Princess Beatrice drew two silver wings united by a red disc with the Spanish crown.

It is likely that Princess Beatrice, who was an Egyptologist and artist, would have based the logo on the Egyptian scarab, the winged disc of the Burial site of Seti I or Maat's wings.

In Spain the emblem is known colloquially as Rokiski the last name of the engraver who created military pilot wings between 1939 and 1965. Pilot wings and other Air Force specialties are based on the Rokiski.[6][7]

So, if you look at the logo on the fin of the Spanish Air Force Academy Jungmanns, it seems the “Aguila” (bird) is holding the “Rokiski” (wings).

It gets better:  Princess Beatrice was the vivacious granddaughter of British Queen Victoria and was married to Alfonzo, a pilot who was one of the first and most distinguished aviators in the Spanish military.

.

Their histories are fascinating.

So, part of the logo we see on the tail of the Jungmann was designed by a member of British royalty, for her husband who was the head of aerial forces for General Franco following the Spanish Civil War.

That is so cool…..

I asked Paco if the historic symbol found on the tail of the Jungmann was still used today.  He said yes. The symbol can be found on the Spanish Air Force Academy’s elementary and advanced training Pilatus PC-21 aircraft :

It is also seen today on the CASA C-101’s flying with the “Patrulla Aguila” display team. The airplane is also used for currency training for Spanish Air Force pilots who are not assigned to any operational squadron.

Look at all those “Aguila” logos on the fins.

Would anyone happen to have an original logo I could copy?  I’m feeling the need to make a stencil or a decal for my Jungmann :)

Jungmeister U-90

Written by: Administrator
Created: 14 April 2024
U-90 has led a hard life. Manufactured at Dornier in Altenrhein, Switzerland in 1940 the aircraft was employed by the Swiss military until moving to the civil register as HB-MKI in 1968/9, although it appears that the aircraft was exported in 1969 before that registration could be applied. The late Bruce Kemper purchased a number of Jungmeisters from Albert Reusch and HB-MKI was one of the first batch of five shipped to the USA.

In 1976, now registered as N1940H and owned by Texas aerobatic pilot Bob Haak, the former U-90 was involved in a serious accident. Reportedly this happened at the conclusion of a low level loop. Following the accident, the aircraft was rebuilt with a Lycoming engine and a cowling which would be unlikely to win a prize at an aircraft beauty contest. Initially repainted white/red, it reverted to the familiar Swiss military scheme before It was placed on display at the Texas Air Museum in San Antonio.

During the white/red period, the aircraft displayed a German Imperial Eagle (Reichsadler) motif on the fin, but an eagle with part of one leg missing. This was apparently because Bob Haak sported a similar configuration :)

Now comes a happier period in U-90's life. Retrieved from the museum Tom Muller set about bringing the aircraft back to its original configuration. WIth a Siemens Sh14 engine newly overhauled by Dirk Bende and Swiss border conspicuity paint scheme, U-90 flew for a number of years from the Thomaston, Georgia airport until Tom was persuaded to part with it by Dr. Tim Callis. - There are more details of the rebuild here: U-90 Update

Unfortunately, in an accident that is still not fully understood, Dr. Callis was seriously injured when U-90 crashed on takeoff from the Ohio County airport in Kentucky. (Dr. Callis continues to recover and as of last month is communicating with family members and telephoning old friends to catch up)

And now what will with any luck be the final, and best part of U-90s life, the aircraft has been transported to the Bücker Museum in Teufen, Switzerland, where Albert Zeller and Thierry Lestang have already begun the rebuilding process. The Bitz company in Augsburg Germany will repair the fuselage and is manufacturing a new lower left wing.
